Flight Path of Heroes – Charting a path to Vimy and back!
Sound Venture Productions is proud to announce that Flight Path of Heroes, the documentary, is currently in production and preparing to cover a landmark event in France - the 100th anniversary of The Battle of Vimy Ridge.
This third instalment of A Nation Soars - Commemorating Canada’s Great War Flyers showcases the bravery of Canadian soldiers and pilots at Vimy who, in the face of insurmountable odds, persevered and helped stem the German tide on the ground and in the air. Bridging the past with the present, the documentary also features the patriotic and emotional journey of Vimy Flight, a commemorative squadron who will be participating at Canada’s official ceremony observing the battle’s centennial on April 9th, 2017 t The event is expected to be covered extensively by international media and will be witnessed by over 20,000 attendees, including 10,000 Canadian youth.
Since its beginnings in 2014, A Nation Soars has been working in close alliance with the pilots of Vimy Flight. Together in partnership with the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley, BC, the team has injected the project with incredible historical aviation knowledge, resources and dexterity to build two replica Sopwith Pup biplanes. Constructed by skilled museum volunteers and young Air Cadets, these two biplanes are to play a central part in the Vimy Flight mission.
Upon completion of their April mission in France, Vimy Flight will return to Canada and embark on a cross-Canada tour from East to West between May and October of this year. A two-week stop in Ottawa during the height of Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations is destined to be a major highlight as the squadron is working on a plan to perform a commemorative fly-past over Parliament on July 1st.
Vimy Flight’s biplane tour across Canada represents a central component of a broad public engagement initiative that will honour two treasured anniversaries of our nationhood – The Battle of Vimy Ridge Centennial and Canada’s Sesquicentennial. This will only further reinforce the A Nation Soars/Flight Path of Heroes legacy.
Working closely with key educational partners including the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, The Vimy Foundation, EF Educational Tours and the Air Cadet League of Canada, the biplane tour aims to bring Vimy home. It also seeks to inspire extensive participation and learning in communities across Canada with educational outreach and supporting tools. Canadians will be informed, engaged and taught about the contributions of our soldiers and pilots who bravely fought at Vimy – and how this significant event contributed to who we are today as a nation.
“As we head over to be a part of this historic Vimy milestone, I can’t believe how far our project has actually soared. We’re far beyond what was first envisioned several years ago. What’s truly exciting is that we now have the opportunity to be part of a much larger message that will resonate with Canadians from coast to coast.”
Tim Joyce, President of Sound Venture Productions
A Nation Soars and its third instalment, Flight Path of Heroes, is a partnership between Sound Venture Productions and The Royal Canadian Geographical Society and is funded in part by Canadian Heritage and Veterans Affairs Canada. The documentary will be premiered on CPAC, the Cable Public Affairs Channel in November, 2017.
A Nation Soars is currently in production on the final documentary of the trilogy entitled Flight Path of Heroes, which focuses on the air war contribution at The Battle of Vimy Ridge and the broader battle of Arras. As part of this, we will be profiling Vimy Flight as they prepare for a historic mission to Vimy, France in April 2017. This story will be nationally broadcast in both English & French in the fall of 2017.
Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of The Battle of Vimy Ridge. It will also coincide with the 150th anniversary of Canada as a nation. As historian Desmond Morton wrote: ”For Canadians, Vimy Ridge was a nation-building experience. For some, then and later, it symbolized the fact that the Great War was also Canada’s war of independence”.
Vimy Flight: Birth of a Nation is a historic biplane tour that is planning to fly over Vimy, France as a stirring part of the 100th anniversary observance on April 9th 2017. Shortly after this historic occasion, Vimy Flight will then return to Canada and begin an East to West cross-Canada eductional tour, bringing our flying display to a number of communities along the way. The past and present will come together in a tour that will span one nation and two treasured anniversaries of nationhood: Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation and the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
In conjunction with our key partners - EF Educational Tours, The Vimy Foundation & The Air Cadet League of Canada, A Nation Soars is working very closely with Vimy Flight as they plan for this historic mission. This highly inticipated tour will look to integrate & educate Canada’s youth, so that they can understand how great the cost of war and what we owe.
Vimy Flight is currently seeking a lead sponsor for this historic event. With it comes naming rights for the entire 2017 calendar of events starting in Vimy, France in April.

In memory of Bobby
It is with great sadness that I, along with my colleagues at Sound Venture reflect on the passing of a great friend. Over his long tenure at Sound Venture, Bob Callaghan brought a dedication & passion to his directing craft that never faltered. He always put his heart into everything he undertook for us and this led to many successes that I am extremely proud of. I have many fond memories working with Bob on so many projects that took us to many far reaches of this great country. I can truly say that Bob was most at home on the road and working in the great outdoors. His wise perspective mixed with his wonderful sense of humour was always reassuring. With such a long storied career, we have lost a very gifted individual. Bob brought an unparalleled wealth of knowledge to the Ottawa film-making community and we will all truly miss him.

Sound Venture ramps up on another exciting Parks Canada shoot
After an amazing spring scout of the spectacular Cyprus Hills region in Southwest Saskatchewan, Sound Venture’s film crew is once again preparing for another historical adventure this Summer.
This time it’s to create a new visitor-experience film surrounding the story of Fort Walsh and the Cyprus Hills Massacre National Historic Sites.
The Cypress Hills Massacre was a mass murder that occurred on June 1, 1873, in the Cypress Hills region of Battle Creek, Saskatchewan (know then as the NWT). It involved a group of American bison hunters, American wolf hunters or 'wolfers', American and Canadian whisky traders, Métis cargo haulers or 'freighters', and a camp of Assiniboine people. An estimated twenty or more Natives died. The Cypress Hills Massacre prompted the “March Westward” of the Northwest Mounted Police, to prevent further conflict. Established in 1875, Fort Walsh would quickly become the most important, largest and most heavily armed fort the North West Mounted Police garrisoned during their early years in the West.
The film is being written by Mike Laewen and directed by Jocelyn Forgues. Tim Joyce, President of Sound Venture states: “We are extremely honoured and pleased to continue to have such wonderful storytelling opportunities through our Parks Canada work. And it’s often the lesser-known important historical events such as this that really brings a higher understanding of who we are as Canadians and how far we’ve come as a Nation.”
The principal shooting is planned to commence in mid-July and wrap by the end of the Summer.

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister Responsible for Parks Canada, along with Jessie Inman, Chief Executive Officer of the Confederation Centre and Karen Jans, Field Superintendent for Parks Canada, Prince Edward Island were all present for the well-attended ribbon cutting ceremony.

Sound Venture Productions and The Royal Canadian Geographical Society embark on an exciting First World War initiative!
In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the First World War, Sound Venture Productions and The Royal Canadian Geographical Society have teamed together to highlight maps and the evolution of cartography as part of a broad initiative entitled Drawn to Victory. The heroic and vital role Canadians played in mapmaking in the First World War led to Canada becoming an innovator in aerial photography and map mosaics in the early 1920s; which helped to establish the basis of today’s modern method of mapmaking.
The elements of this project include the production of a 1 hour broadcast documentary in English & French, the production of a bilingual poster map for circulation in Canadian Geographic/Géographica magazine, the development of supporting articles in Canadian Geographic/Géographica magazine, the creation of a website and other on-line educational materials, the creation of 5 large interactive floor maps to travel to schools across Canada with accompanying teacher resources.
Drawn to Victory is made possible through the financial support from the Government of Canada’s “Commemorate Canada” program.
As President Tim Joyce explains, “Through some of our initial research we knew we had discovered a really interesting First World War story involving Canadians that had never been told before. The partnership with the RCGS was such a natural fit and together, we are looking forward to delivering an exciting bilingual integrated multi-platform project to a wide Canadian audience.”
Drawn to Victory also involves in-kind resources from a number of key Government departments including The Canadian War Museum, Library and Archives Canada and Canada’s Space and Aviation Museum. The project runs until March 31, 2016, with the first components expected to begin rolling out by as early as the fall of this year. More updates to follow!
